In the last District 5-6A match of the season, the Coppell student section showed out, chanting and dancing as the Coppell volleyball team delivered hit after hit against the Flower Mound Marcus volleyball team.
Coppell took the lead, but Flower Mound Marcus remained close during the second and third sets, scoring consecutively. In the end, The Cowgirls stayed strong on defense and swept the Lady Marauders, 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-20) on Friday at CHS Arena.
The Cowgirls open the playoffs against Allen at 6:30 p.m. at Hebron on Thursday in a Class 6A Region I bi-district match.
Maintaining ball control played a crucial role in the Cowgirls’ victory. Middle and right side hitters assisted in taking pressure off from the Marauders’ hitters.
“We had great ball control and we blocked better tonight than the first time that we played them,” Coppell coach Robyn Ross said. “Tonight our emphasis was to run our middles and our right sides, and they did a great job of that, which left space for our outside hitters here to get some really great swings.”
The team adjusted defensively to Marcus’s shots.
“They’re really shotty, so we knew we were going to have to play really good on-lock defense and just be on our toes on defense as a whole,” senior setter Emma Pehl said. “We did a really good job at giving our team the most so I’m pretty proud of that.”
Being the last district match of the season, meant that it was the seniors last time playing a match at CHS Arena. According to senior opposite hitter Mari Hill, it was a special moment to win.
“I’m so happy that I got to experience the last time with my teammates,” Hill said. “It feels good to win and just to soak in these last few moments.”
Ross is ready for her athletes to show out.
“These girls are playing some of the best volleyball that they have all season, and I want them to go into playoffs knowing that even though we’re the underdog, that we can go in and surprise people,” Ross said.
