A whistle. Pads smash into each other. Coppell Black team junior wide receiver Jaden Bibbs catches a pass in the end zone and scores the game’s last points, securing Coppell Black’s 17-7 victory.
Wednesday night, the Coppell football team hosted its annual spring game at Buddy Echols Field, splitting the team into Coppell Red and Coppell Black.
“We’ve had a successful spring, so I just wanted to make sure our kids came out, gave the community a good show and got out of here healthy,” Coppell coach Antonio Wiley said.
The game started in Coppell Red’s possession with rushes and short passes. A 37-yard field goal by Coppell Black junior kicker Caden Mechsner in the second quarter started Coppell Black’s lead 3-0.
The second half saw more points, starting with Coppell Black junior quarterback Ishan Mair rushing into the end zone during the third quarter. This was followed by Coppell Red junior running back Jaden George opening the fourth quarter with a touchdown from the goal line, putting the score at 10-7 with Coppell Black still ahead.
“I hope to get faster than my reads and make better decisions,” Coppell Red sophomore quarterback Carter Zingelmann said.
The final touchdown was scored by Coppell Black junior wide receiver Jaden Bibbs through a pass by Mair, solidifying Coppell Black’s 17-7 win.
“I learned to trust my teammates, and finished strong,” Mair said.
Overall, the game provided insight into Coppell’s performance heading into the 2026 season.
“I learned that we’ve got a chance to be a really talented football team if we put it together and continue to work to get better,” Wiley said. “I think we’re in a good place, but we can’t think this is our final place.”
