Coppell senior midfield Ally Gunnels competes against McKinney Piper Headrick on Feb. 29 at Coppell Middle School North. The Coppell girls lacrosse team hosts Lovejoy at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Coppell Middle School North.

Coming off consecutive losses after an undefeated streak, Coppell returns to the fundamentals to finish off the regular season on a high note.

On Tuesday, the Coppell girls lacrosse team (5-3-0 overall, 4-2-0 in Division II North) plays Lovejoy (2-4-0, 2-2-0) at 7:30 p.m. at Coppell Middle School North. Coppell is third in Division II North, with Lovejoy trailing behind at seventh.

In preparation for Lovejoy, Coppell set defensive matchups against strong Lovejoy players such as midfields McKenzie Quigley, Ava Palazzolo and MacKenzie Metzger. During the game, Coppell hopes to build a quick lead and carry that momentum throughout the match.

“We know the things that Lovejoy is capable of doing but our defense is good at slowing down fast breaks,” Coppell coach Emily Doran said. “We’re going to focus on our offensive game and make sure that our offense feels prepared to take down their defense.”

Keeping playoffs in the back of their mind, the Cowgirls maximize their potential through practice, focusing on key technical aspects.

“During practice, we’ve been working on our transitions,” Doran said. “We’re ensuring that our players who come up with the ball are successfully able to move the ball down the field and put it in the back of the net.”

In her free time she likes reading fantasy books, traveling and eating her favorite candy, sour patch kids.
