It was moments away from the ending of the game. The Coppell dugout, quiet in defeat. 

Suddenly the air changed. 

Sophomore utility player Caroline Campbell tripled bringing back the screams and shouts from Coppell on Friday at CISD Baseball/Softball Complex. 

“It was great. I really felt that I kind of kept the energy going,” Campbell said. “It’s sad the way it turned out, but I think it could have been a great start to something else.”

It was not enough and the game ended with Flower Mound Marcus emerging with a 7-1 victory. For the Coppell softball team, this was the last game of the season.

In the second inning, Coppell senior first baseman Cecilia Bourque scored a run as part of a 1-for-3 performance and Marcus got two runs as well, keeping a win still at reach for both teams.

In the sixth inning the tides started changing, Marcus got a home run and like dominos, one after the other, four runs came down after. 

“Their bats were a little bit hotter than ours,” Coppell coach Emily Janiek said. “They were reading pitches a little bit better, and they were able to spray the field a little bit better than we did.” 

Even though Coppell’s offense struggled, their defense kept strong.

“We made a lot of key defensive plays. Defense hasn’t always been an issue for us. We’ve had a strong defensive corps this year,” Janiek said. “They weren’t as hot as what they have been throughout this season.”

During the game Marcus had nine hits, while Coppell had five. 

“Our pitchers were working their butts off,” Campbell said. “We could have had more hits, but that’s not something we can really control with the pitcher.”

While it may be the end of this season for the softball team, they have more to come in future years. 

“I’m proud of what we’re building for future years,” Janiek said. “I’m proud of the effort we’ve seen throughout this season to even put us in the conversation of potential playoffs. I’m excited to see where the program goes next year.”light
