The State of Texas Academic Assessment of Readiness, or STAAR, was recently announced to be required for algebra I, English I, English II, biology and U.S. history students to take. When People’s Newspapers readers were polled, most parents of children taking the STAAR test believed it should not be given this year, and if it required in-person attendance, most states their child would not participate.

The Coppell ISD Board of Trustees approved changes to the 2021-22 school year’s calendar on Feb. 25. Changes include shifting the first day of school from Aug. 11 to Aug. 17 and reducing the number of school days from 176 to 174, while maintaining the required 75,600 minutes of student instruction.

The Coppell High School Tennis Program has had nine student athletes commit to play tennis in college over the past ten years. With six of the nine having been women, CHS Tennis Coach Rich Foster says this is due in part to the larger number of girls college tennis teams and greater amount of competition for male athletes. With more opportunities, women athletes receive more scholarship opportunities.

The first 2020 presidential debate on Tuesday between President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden in Cleveland was marred by frequent interruptions and yelling. On Wednesday, the Commision of Presidential Debates made an announcement proposing changes to the format of future debates, such as allowing the moderator to cut off a candidate’s microphone if they are not called on to answer a question.
