The Coppell softball team threw their hands up and high-fived each other in celebration after a critical double play during the fifth inning on Saturday at CISD Baseball/Softball Complex.
In a fierce back-and-forth battle with Denton Braswell, the Cowgirls won 4-2 in District 5-6A play.
The Cowgirls started off strong in the first inning. Coppell senior infielder Madison Scott smashed a double to put the Cowgirls ahead, 2-0.
At the top of the second inning, the Bengals replied with a double of their own by Braswell freshman outfielder Jaylee Brazier to tie the score at 2-2.
“Our focus was just trying to find a way to push through with our energy, to get over that hump and then to find our way to get ahead at the end of the game,” Coppell coach Emily Janicek said.
Nothing resulted from the third and fourth innings.
The Cowgirls closed down the Bengals on three separate occasions. In the following two innings, they were able to make three swift catches to end Bengals at bats quickly.
“Our defense was good, it’s what kept us winning,” Coppell senior infielder Cecilia Borque said. “We work through routine grounders, pop flies and cuts all the time. That’s why our outfield was great today, they got the ball out fast and made the catches that needed to be made.”
Coppell junior catcher Emma Praytor let it fly in the fifth inning, resulting in a double to make it 4-2. The Cowgirls remained in control until the game ended.
“Towards the end, we picked up our energy and worked behind our pitcher,” Praytor said. “Our bats waking up at the end of the game really helped us open it up and win the game.”
In the final innings, both the Bengals and Cowgirls remained scoreless.
“The all out effort in the infield and outfield getting balls and making plays were great overall,” Coppell sophomore pitcher Scarlett Stevens said. “We worked behind me, and I’m really proud of our infield and outfield, they did great.”
The Cowgirls play at Flower Mound on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
