A surge of noise, chants and applause rolled through the field as the Coppell softball team broke open the game in the third inning, scoring five runs against Little Elm on Thursday at CISD Baseball/Softball Complex.
The inning proved decisive, as Coppell took a lead it did not relinquish in a 5-2 District 5-6A win.
The win ended a four-game home losing streak and marked Cowgirls’ second victory over Little Elm this season.
In the third inning, Cowgirls capitalized on scoring opportunities while the Lobos added one run. The burst shifted momentum after two quieter innings and created a gap the Lobos did not overcome.
This set the tone for the rest of the game, bringing confidence to the field.
During the inning, Coppell junior infielder Emma Praytor lined a double, driving in two runs. Senior infielder Cecilia Bourque crossed home from third, followed by senior infielder Madison Scott, as the Cowgirls completed the five-run inning.
Earlier in the game, Lobos opened strong by scoring one run in the first inning, while Cowgirls did not score. Neither team scored in the second inning, increasing anticipation for the third.
From that point, Coppell maintained control. Despite collecting eight hits, Lobos did not convert those opportunities into additional runs.
The Cowgirls finished with five hits and limited defensive mistakes. Both teams were scoreless over the final four innings as Coppell protected its lead.
“We slowly picked up on batting, but our defense was the strongest tonight,” Coppell coach Emily Janicek said. “Our energy stayed up where it needed to be, so this game was solid.”
Sophomore infielder Lilija Bowen returned for her first game since a back injury.
“Team chemistry worked really well, I had a good time cheering each other on,” Bowen said.
The Cowgirls play at Lewisville on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
