Multiple times on Tuesday night, it felt like a breakthrough was coming.
The Coppell boys soccer team created chances, pushed the ball into attacking space and forced pressure inside the box. But each moment met a stop, a clearance or a save, leaving the Cowboys locked in a 0-0 tie against Hebron at Buddy Echols Field.
“It was tough to tie, but I think we did well,” goalkeeper Andrew Telling said. “I think everybody wanted to win, but it was a good overall defensive performance.”
The match nearly featured an early goal when Coppell junior midfielder Emmanuel Mendez Gil drove forward for a shot less than four minutes into the first half, but the attempt was blocked at the last second. Senior forward Liam Spiller later found space inside the box with 30:57 left in the first half, only for Hebron’s goalkeeper to secure the ball before it crossed the line.
Coppell coach Stephen Morris said the Cowboys created opportunities but needed more quality in front of goal.
“We’ve been getting through, but it’s about creating more quality moments,” Morris said. “The more quality chances you create, the more likely you are to finish.”
Due to senior goalkeeper Chase Anderson’s injury, off the bench Telling became a key presence late in the first half, making multiple saves under pressure to keep the match scoreless heading into halftime. Coppell’s back line limited Hebron to only a handful of shots, forcing most attempts from distance.
“I just want to be there for my team,” Telling said. “They’re always there for me.”
The defensive battle carried into the second half. Mendez Gil generated another opportunity after the break with 32:23 left in the game, but missed wide, while Hebron applied pressure near the goal line that Coppell cleared repeatedly.
Junior midfielder Colt Kaiser said the Cowboys’ focus remained on minimizing mistakes while adjusting to a new formation.
“It’s about not letting up little mistakes,” Kaiser said. “We had chances we should’ve put in the back of the net. You can’t make them all, but you’ve got to make some.”
Coppell’s best late opportunity came with under four minutes remaining when Spiller attempted to finish following a foul, but the shot was saved at the line.
Neither side found the breakthrough as the Cowboys and Hawks finished tied 0-0.
Morris said preparation will shift toward creating width and improving finishing ahead of Friday’s at Denton Guyer.
“We’re going to have to find ways to create better chances and stay strong defensively,” Morris said.
