KELLER – Tears slid down the faces of the Coppell girls soccer team as the final seconds drained from the clock.
“Three… two… one.”
The buzzer sounded.
Just across the Cowgirls’ bench, Keller’s players jumped, chanted and celebrated a 2-1 win on Tuesday in the Class 6A Region I Finals at Keller ISD Athletics Complex to advance to the state semifinals. For the Cowgirls, the defending state champions, their season ends.
Some players dropped onto their hands and knees, wiping away tears, other players stood behind the bench, sorting out their multitude of emotions with their teammates. The Cowgirls comforted each other, even with their own feelings and emotions, support still shining through the despair of their season ending. When the match concluded, seniors felt the grief, knowing it was the last time they would walk off the field together.
Keller scored the match winner with 22 minutes left to play.The Cowgirls gained possession in the goalie box, but quickly turned into pressure from Keller senior forward Claire Garritson, who stepped into a blind spot in the Cowgirls’ defense. Garritson took control and sent a direct shot past Clark, securing the Indians’ lead.

Twenty-seven minutes remained in the first half when junior midfielder Lydia Kennington took a corner kick, hitting the head of Keller sophomore midfielder Billie Davis, giving the Cowgirls a 1-0 lead.
The match quickly turned into a physical battle. The Cowgirls created opportunities through their offense, but the Indians’ defense refused to break.
Coppell senior goalkeeper Kelsey Clark faced a critical moment, turning away back-to-back shots by Garritson. Just off of the tips of Clark’s fingers and sliding forward, giving her a split second to recover as a second shot flew towards the net. Clark reacted, extending her arms, with her head smashing on the turf, preserving the lead.
Twenty-two minutes remained in the first half when a corner goal from Keller senior forward Ella Gutierrez just crossed the thick white line to tie the match at 1.
The match went to half a 1-1 tie.
The intensity continued to grow In the second half, in which Coppell responded with urgency.
With 15 minutes left in the match, the Cowgirls held possession from the Indians’ but turnovers and aggressive contact held off another Cowgirl goal. As time ticked, bodies collided and yellow cards were pitched, each play becoming a game of contest.
Still, Coppell kept coming.
In the final minute, the Cowgirls worked for one last shot. Keller senior goalkeeper Ava Johnston made the save, preserving the 1-0 lead. Johnston reset play as Keller maintained possession in the closing seconds, and time expired.
“We’re both two of the best teams in this region,” Keller coach Jeff Simpson said. “They had their chances. We had chances, and we just put away more than they did.”
The heart that the Cowgirls put into the match is what Coppell coach Craig Able admires, reminding them of who they are.
“Obviously tonight stinks, it’s nothing but hurt,” Able said. “But ultimately they should feel incredibly proud of what they’ve accomplished.”
Able fostered a positive environment with the team as it sought to win another state championship. The Cowgirls seized the program’s first district title since 2019 and made an extended playoff run following last year’s championship season.
“I don’t want one moment to define any of our players,” Able said. “I want these girls to find success on the field, off the field, and enjoy fighting for their program, and I think they did that tonight.”
