Coppell senior Liam Spiller broke free with nine minutes remaining in the match. The cheers grew as he rushed towards the net dribbling between defenders, and in a split second, the ball hit the goal.
Fans erupted as the Coppell boys soccer team grabbed the lead in a 2-1 victory against Little Elm on Thursday at Buddy Echols Field. The surge brought Coppell to another District 5-6A victory, as the Cowboys capitalized on sustained pressure and defensive discipline to secure the win.
The match had been rescheduled from Tuesday due to snow and icy weather throughout the week.
Little Elm opened the scoring in the first half when junior defender Victor Sanchez found the net with 20:05 remaining, giving the Lobos an early 1-0 lead. Coppell, however, responded less than two minutes later, as junior forward Emmanuel Mendez Gil drove on the right side towards goal and finished to tie the match at 1-1 with 18:49 left in the half.
The Cowboys continued to create chances before halftime, including a blocked attempt by Coppell senior midfielder Brooks Kaiser that kept the score level heading into the break.
“It’s just high intensity and high work rate,” Spiller said. “With those two things, we were really able to hold our own throughout the game.”
In the second half, Coppell controlled the pace, applying consistent pressure and limiting Little Elm’s attacking opportunities.
That persistence paid off in the final minutes, when Spiller scored.
“I feel really good,” Spiller said. “I’ve been in a little drought recently, so it feels good to finally get one.”
Spiller credited the extra work leading into the match, as the team and players adjusted to an irregular schedule caused by winter weather.
“We talked about how we hadn’t been finishing very well,” Spiller said. “A bunch of guys came in and we did our own finishing work and set-piece marking.”
Coppell’s defense anchored the win, forcing turnovers and shutting down Little Elm’s late attempts to equalize. With 2:12 remaining in the match, senior midfielder Justice Ihezie’s multiple defensive stops against the Lobos were key moments for Coppell maintaining control.
“They played really well possessing the ball, stopping their attacks and creating scoring chances,” Coppell assistant coach David Rosanski said. “The defense stayed organized and worked together as a team.”
Rosansky added that the late goal was the result of steady pressure throughout the half.
“The attack was coming,” Rosanski said. “I wasn’t surprised when it happened.”
