With District 5-6A play tightening, the Coppell soccer team enters Friday night’s match against Flower Mound knowing there is little margin for error.

Coppell sits at 4-1 in district play, but coach Stephen Morris emphasized that the first round of district always brings uncertainty.

“Flower Mound’s always good,” Morris said. “They always get players. Our players know their players; they play on the same club teams. They’ve been a strong program for years.”

Flower Mound (2-1-2) enters with its only district defeat against undefeated Flower Mound Marcus.

For Coppell, the focus this week is on speed of play and getting the ball across the field effectively.

“Our biggest struggle this year has been that once we win it, we have to start to move the ball,” Morris said. “Having quicker ideas to take advantage of teams being out of orientation is something we’re continuing to work on.”

That emphasis shows progress as the season has developed. Coppell has steadily tightened its play, particularly in transition moments, as it pushes toward its postseason goal.

The Cowboys enters the match in second place. With a challenging week ahead, Coppell understands the importance of taking matches one at a time.

“We have to win tomorrow,” Morris said. “I’m not looking past tomorrow.”
