Eighteen seconds left in the fourth quarter. Stepping back onto the court, Flower Mound attempted to close the six point gap, with Flower Mound junior Emily Tran scoring a 3-pointer, closely followed by the buzzer ending the game.

Despite Flower Mound’s first quarter lead, the Cowgirls executed their practice strategies in a 51-48 victory on Tuesday in District 5-6A. Coppell improved to 6-0 in district play.

The Jaguars gained possession of the ball during tipoff, allowing for Flower Mound junior Lorelei Evert to score the first points of the match. The first quarter quickly became a catch-up, with the teams fighting for the lead, ending with Flower Mound leading, 15-14.

The second quarter allowed for the Cowgirls to heighten their offense, entering halftime with a four-point lead. Turnovers created quick transitions from offense to defense for both teams.

“We were able to turn the game around early by focusing, being aggressive and not letting their main shots get to us,” Coppell sophomore guard Amber Coffey said.

Despite their slow start, the Cowgirls fought hard through the rest of the first half, taking every opportunity to score. 

Coppell senior forward Adriana Reijnen and sophomore Avary Campbell pushed the game forward, scoring multiple free throws and 2-pointers. 

The second half marked both teams getting more offensive as the Cowgirls’ lead grew. This allowed for 19 points scored by Flower Mound in the third quarter, closing the gap as the game drew to an end.

“We were definitely strong this game in being aggressive and staying strong even when they started matching our pace,” Coffey said. 

The team’s offensive tactics, highlighted by the numerous assists given to each layup or 2-pointer, fostered engagement with every score as the teams grew increasingly competitive. 

“We want to keep adding onto our streak to finish the season undefeated,” Coffey said.
