On Tuesday night, the Coppell boys soccer team lost to Plano West, 3-1, at Buddy Echols Field. The Cowboys are now 1-1 on the season and 0-1 in District 6-6A matches.

Senior forward Gareth Meza scored the lone goal of the night with a 1:36 left in the first half. The Cowboys maintained a 1-0 lead up until the midway point in the second half when Plano West senior midfielder Nicholas Krupin scored with 19:35 left to go in the game putting the score at 1-1.

There is a renewed intensity in the match as Coppell attempts to regain the lead but only three minutes later Krupin scores again making the score 2-1.

“Soccer is a game, it ebbs and flows, it goes back and forth,” assistant coach Kyle Kelson said. “I think we had the one [goal] and we conceded one. We can’t put our heads down. We have to look to respond to that.”

The Cowboys are now fighting harder than ever to tie the match as Plano West junior Pranay Kotwal takes three shots, all of which were saved by senior goalkeeper Jacob Campbell.

With 0:26 left in the game, the Cowboys are making a final effort to score when Plano West junior Daniel Fialkov steals the ball and scores.

“I think the boys did a great job,” Kelson said. “They created chances, we just needed some more execution in the final third which I know they can do. I know we could put away more than what we did tonight. They’ll be working on that and ready to go. As coaches we take the blame for this one tonight.”

The next match is at Lewisville on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

“We’re looking forward to Friday,” Kelson said. “It’s going to be a good game. We know it’s going to be physical. They are usually a really physical, tough opponent so we have to keep our heads up and make sure we’re not getting any silly yellow cards or anything like that.”

The Cowboys look to their match against Lewisville for their first district win.

We just need to take it to them,” Kelson said. “We’re hungry, we need that first district win and I think Friday is gonna be a really good opportunity to do that.”
