The Granada welcomes Neko Case, Oh No! Oh My!

Alternative rock / country singer-songwriter Neko Case, hometown: Alexandria, Virginia,   hits downtown tonight after her opening band, Oh No! Oh My!. After playing this evening at the Granada , she will be playing at Antone’s in downtown Austin.

Case is best known for her solo career, but played before as a member of the Canadian rock group, The New Pornographers, and recorded, for a few years, under the name Neko Case & Her Boyfriends. She performs mostly her own material, but also can be heard performing covers from artists such as Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and Hank Williams.

Case’s sound resembles that of Cat Power, Feist, and Jenny Lewis, with her main instruments including: vocals, percussion, piano and guitar.  She has currently produced eight CDs during her solo career, two including Her Boyfriends, and one EP. Her latest CD, Middle Cyclone, was released in March this year. Seven of her CDs, leaving out Live From Austin, TX, are available in her website store along with T-Shirts, vinyl, and posters.

Her show tonight at the Granada is sure to rock her fans as she performs songs from her latest CD and more.

Check back late tonight for a concert review.

Neko Case rocked the show tonight with an amazing set of about 20 of her best songs. She, and her singing partner (whose name I do not know – she was never introduced), sang in perfect harmony all night, a very difficult task when singing with the likes of Case. The three string instrument players traded in and out of two acoustic guitars, two electric guitars, one bass guitar, and one upright base, while Case alternated between an acoustic guitar, ukulele and vocals alone.

Not on the top of my favorite things list was the fact that Case was under the influence during her entire performance, unexpected from such a laid back and acoustic singer, and the point that she never introduced any of her band mates who were all very talented and did a great job of assisting her during the show.

Case’s opening band, Oh No! Oh My!, was a great suprise for the audience as they warmed us all up and proved themselves to be quite the up and coming band. Oh No! Oh My! is a four piece indie rock group from Austin, TX.

Oh No! Oh My! Fast Facts:

Band members: Greg Barkley, Joel Calvin, Daniel Hoxmeier andTim Regan

CDs: 1 (Oh No! Oh My!)

EPs: 2 (Between the Devil and the Sea, Dmitrij Dmitrij)

Total Instruments played: 17 (Guitars, Banjos, Accordions, Keys, Wurlitzers, Tambourines, Hand Claps, Percussion, Drums, Bells, Shakers, Vocals, Bass, Rhodes, Locks, Bolts, Syths)

All in all, Case put up a performance that will not soon be forgotten. She is a very talented girl with a knack for capturing an audience’s heart, and I’m sorry I’ll miss her in Austin, as my flight lands Wednesday, a day after her performance.
