After three weeks of battles between the contestants of NBC’s ‘The Voice,’ 2010 CHS graduate Sharon Mathai returned to the screen to defeat teammate Nicole Galyon. The two took on Sara Bareilles ‘Love Song’ in the final round of battles.
On ‘The Voice,’ once contestants are chosen to be on a certain team, they spend four weeks battling other members of their own team one on one. Their coach then chooses who will progress to the next round. With 18 acts already through the battles, the final 12 went head-to-head with only six making it through to the next round. It was up to coach Adam Levine to decide Mathai’s fate.
Earlier in the week, Mathai worked with guest judge and 90s music icon Alanis Morissette who advised her to not take the audience for granted with her natural talent. Morissette told Mathai “when you’re born to do something, it’s pretty obvious.” Levine gave Mathai only a few words of wisdom, advising that she stretches her notes out more.
After the performance, the judges offer critique to both musicians before one is eliminated. Aguilera tells Mathai that she brought the right energy to the stage and told her that it was a “no brainer” that she would win the round. Shelton said Mathai was able to incorporate breathing into her harder notes, and Cee Lo also picked Mathai over Galyon, calling Galyon “generic.” Levine told both girls that he was disappointed in the performances.
Mathai will continue onto the live shows next week at 7 pm on NBC.
