You are walking along a street when you see a sign leading you down one path. The other path does not have a sign, but somehow is an easier route to the destination.
This is how it can feel having a dream job without the ideal AP class to prepare for it.
There are many non-existent AP courses students wish existed, whether it be something that would be helpful for their future or an interesting class to learn while also offering them college credit.
When you ask an aspiring lawyer what AP classes they are taking, they usually never say “I’m taking AP Law.” They’ll most likely reply with “I’m taking AP Government,” but would this really benefit their aspiring career path?
Yes, AP Government is important for your future. However, it is not the only course useful in high school. This applies to other AP classes, too.
If one plans for the healthcare field and attends medical school, AP Biology is essential to teach you about the basics of life. But if AP Anatomy existed, it would also be important because it would dive deeper into the aspects of the human body.
In addition to AP classes encompassing the basics of a career path, more specific courses focusing on a specific topic of a field can also be of interest to students looking to follow that path. For example, for a student interested in the healthcare field but more specifically a neurosurgeon, AP Neuroscience would be the ideal AP class for them to take.
AP classes provide a GPA boost, college credit from the AP exam and students benefitting from the deep level of content. Therefore, introducing new AP courses that will be of interest to students will incline more students to enroll. In turn, the benefits coming with AP classes will apply to more students. In other words, new AP classes will motivate students to take more APs, helping them in their high school career.
There are also many ideas for interesting courses that sound like they would exist in school, but College Board does not offer. These ideas stem from social media, more specifically TikTok, where people share their ideas for AP courses. This is where there is an exchange of ideas as well as engagement in education, showing students really are interested in learning about different kinds of things.
Overall, the discussion of what new AP classes should be introduced stems from the motivation to learn new things and the desire for a specific dream job. If these new courses cause engagement in learning and benefits for the future, then students should be able to explore different subjects to lead them on their dream path.
