The buzzer strikes at the end of the third quarter, signaling the last quarter of the game. The Coppell boys basketball team drives down the court, trying to push as many points as possible as the game is close to an end.
Little Elm, ranked first in District 5-6A at CHS Arena, and now 11-0 after defeating the Cowboys, 73-67.
“Based on last year, we didn’t play very well in this gym and it started out that way in the first half as well,” Little Elm coach Damon Barnett said. “We were able to get back in the game, but we knew that we were gonna have a tough one coming in.”
The Lobos played aggressive offense and defense after examining the Cowboys who used a more hands on approach.
“If anything, I think what we had to alter was just how we handled the ball because they applied a little bit more on ball pressure,” Barnett. “We turned it over a couple of times based on them being more physical and guarding the dribble, so we made some adjustments to be able to handle the ball better than prior to the beginning of the game.”
The Cowboys score point after point, placing the ball strategically to move away from the Lobo’s intense defense. trailing just behind the Lobos by three points with four minutes left in the game. When it reached 11.83 seconds left, the score 73-65, Coppell senior guard Isaiah Fleming took two free throws for a technical call. Fleming makes both the free throws ending the game.
Coppell plays at CHS Arena on Tuesday against Denton Braswell at 7 p.m.
