The tie was not enough to Coppell junior forward Logan Kutchins, refusing the 2-2, Kutchins dribbled up the field, forcing the Hawks to fight against her in the last seven minutes of the second half.
Kutchins scored on Hebron junior keeper Paityn Davis, pushing the score 3-2 with seven minutes left in the match, and made an assist earlier in the game. Walking into the stadium, she finds herself not only trying to make progress but to prove worthy.
“My goal going into this game was to prove something to myself that I belong on this field,” Kutchins said. “Being the bench player last year, I feel like I have a lot to prove this year, so I wanted to prove that to myself and also be there for my teammates and give us chances to score throughout the night.”
The Coppell girls varsity soccer team opens their first District 5-6A game against Hebron at Buddy Echols Field, starting with a quick pace setting up to keep possession.
Hebron senior midfielder Leah Simpson dribbled down the field with intense footwork within the first five minutes of the game, shooting on the Cowgirls. Coppell junior forward Emeline Holder makes the score 1-1.
The match is tense with communication from both sides, cheering on their teammates to gain possession after every turnover.
“The most intense moment is just giving up an early goal to go down 1-0, then working to score a really nice goal to make it 1-1, and then immediately giving up the second goal,” Coppell coach Craig Able said. “That’s frustrating because that’s not our style of play, but I am really proud of the girls being resilient, trusting the system and trusting themselves to ultimately get the job done when it mattered.”
Coppell freshman Jaehee Lee scores off a cross from Coppell senior Neerali Kapadia in the first minute of the second half, tying up the match 2-2. Both teams battle up and down the field, making clean passes and using intricate footwork to hold onto the potential win.
“We want to make sure that teams have to react to us, play our style and play our identity,” Able said.
The Cowgirls apply pressure on the Hawks, rejecting the possibility of the Hawks tying up the score.
Coppell plays at Denton Guyer on Thursday at 7 p.m.
