New faces. New focus. New fire.
The lights in Coppell High School’s gym flicker on before sunrise.
The sound of squeaking sneakers and thuds of basketballs echo through the gym as players finish another workout. As the new season nears, the work finally starts to mean something.
After a long offseason of weight training, early morning workouts and shooting challenges, the Coppell boys basketball enters the year determined to turn hard work into wins.
“They have been getting up every morning and putting that work in,” Coppell coach Ryan Murphy said. “They are stronger and more physical, and you can see it in how they play.”
This season’s roster features 10 returning seniors and five underclassmen, one of the most senior-heavy lineups Coppell has had. The team’s mix of leadership and depth gives it the tools to compete in a demanding district slate.
“We want to play fast and wear teams down,” Murphy said. “With the depth we have, that pace is something we can really take advantage of, and every challenge we’ve given them, they have attacked with a great mentality.”
Defensively, the Cowboys are sticking to their identity. Murphy emphasized a man-to-man foundation. With a deeper bench and improved conditioning, Coppell plans to add more pressing and trapping schemes to create turnovers and quicken transitions in offense.
“Our goal is to be multiple on defense but consistent in our effort,” Murphy said. “We’re going to compete on every possession.”
Leading the charge are senior guard Sibu Socks and senior guard Sebastian Peña, who have emerged as two-way leaders.
“Sebastian and Sibu have really stood out,” Murphy said. “They’re complete players, and their teammates believe in them.”
Off the court, the Cowboys are focused on leadership and maintaining Coppell’s academic standard. Last season, 13 of 15 players earned Academic All-District honors, a number they hope to match while representing the program with pride.
“We want to be a group that people want to come watch because of how we play and how we carry ourselves,” Murphy said.
For Coppell, this season is not about looking ahead to the playoffs or chasing redemption. It is about the team-first mentality and the chance to build something lasting together.
“Last year, we lost sight of what was right in front of us,” Murphy said. “This year, it’s about being the best we can be today and letting everything else take care of itself.”
The Cowboys prepare for their first game starting on Dec. 11 during the Coppell Winter Classic tournament.
“They have really earned every bit of this, but the season has not started yet,” Murphy said. “We’re ready for it.”
