After months of early mornings, film sessions and long practices, the Coppell football season now comes down to the playoffs. On Friday at 7 p.m., the Cowboys (8-1) play the Plano Wildcats (6-4) at Buddy Echols Field in the Class 6A Division I bi-district playoffs.
For Coppell coach Antonio Wiley, the approach remains consistent: prepare with precision, execute with confidence and play complete football.
“Like you do every opponent, we go in, we break them down,” Wiley said. “Coaches come up with a game plan that gives us the best opportunity to win. Then we implement that plan on Monday, practice it all week, and hopefully the kids go out and execute it at a high level.”
Plano, known for its physical run game, presents a challenge that Coppell and its defense are preparing for head-on.
“Plano wants to run the football,” Wiley said. “We have to be physical and stop the run. They’ve got a good offensive line, two skilled running backs and a couple of good receivers who can make plays when they decide to throw it. They’re a pretty complete team, so we’ve got to come out and play a complete game to beat them.”
Heading into November, the message is to control what they can and to do whatever it takes to win.
“I always tell them winning doesn’t just mean win the game, it stands for whatever’s necessary,” Wiley said. “Whatever is necessary to accomplish the task at hand, that’s what we’re doing. That’s our mindset.”
For Coppell, that mindset has fueled a season built on consistency and focus. And now, with playoffs finally here, Wiley said the excitement is as high as ever.
“Anytime we get to line up and play football, it’s a great thing,” he said. “We can’t wait.”
