MIDLOTHIAN – One bounce changed everything.
One fumble. One surge of hope. One season on the line.
The Coppell football team had the opening break. A loose ball and recovery by senior cornerback Tyrell Roberson sent the sideline roaring early in the cold November afternoon. But the defending state champions North Crowley – the same team that ended Coppell’s run last year – never blinked.
The Panthers answered with force, speed and points, pulling away early and handing the Cowboys (10-2) a 46-21 loss in the Class 6A Division I regional semifinals on Saturday afternoon in Midlothian ISD’s Multi-Purpose Stadium.
Following the opening fumble, the next minutes snowballed for the Cowboys. A blocked punt for a safety and a pair of rushing touchdowns from North Crowley junior running back G’yrell Smith put Coppell behind 23-0 in less than a quarter which would end up defining the game.

“We made too many mistakes to beat a really good football team,” Coppell coach Antonio Wiley said. “You can’t have touchdowns called back, jump offsides on fourth-and-short or give them extra life. They’re good enough, they don’t need our help. And we helped them.”
Still, Coppell never folded.
Sophomore quarterback Carter Zingelmann shouldered in a 2-yard rushing touchdown to get on the board with 7:35 left in the first half, then moments later, senior safety Tyree Roberson jumped a route, snatched a pass and flew down the sideline for a pick-six, cutting the score to 23-14 with 6:40 left in the half, bringing the sidelines to life.
For a moment, the Cowboys were within reach again.

But the Panthers answered with what makes them No. 10 in Texas. A late first-half score pushed the lead to 30-14, and two more touchdowns in the third quarter, including Smith’s third of the day, widened the gap beyond Coppell’s reach.
Every time Coppell found life, penalties dragged it back, and combined, the two teams had 26 penalties heading into the fourth quarter. A defensive stop erased by an offside. A fumble return touchdown by sophomore defensive lineman Aaron Isbell wiped away because of holding. A momentum-building drive thrown 15 yards back by an unnecessary roughness penalty.
“We never quit. Our kids don’t know how to quit,” Wiley said. “But we have to find a way to get over this hump. We haven’t yet.”
Zingelmann found senior wide receiver Crew Davis for an 18-yard touchdown with 4:01 left in the fourth, the final push to the end zone, but North Crowley’s lead held.
For seniors, it was their last snap as Cowboys. For underclassmen, it marked the beginning of the long climb back.
Isbell, in his first playoff run as a starter, doesn’t hide from what comes next.
“Good plays or bad plays don’t matter anymore. The season is over,” Isbell said. “Now it’s about getting bigger, faster, stronger. We just have to get better for next year.”
Wiley’s message also emphasizes the same urgency — not defeat, but determination.
“I hurt for my seniors,” Wiley said. “But I’m so proud of them. Nobody gave this group a chance to be in the third round, and they proved a lot of people wrong. Coppell football is in a great place. We’ll be back. We will bounce back.”
