Have you ever felt bored? So bored that you went through your entire semester’s topic for each subject?
Well, I have.
Boredom is something that almost everyone experiences. It is either sitting in long, boring classes or scrolling through your phone, where countless videos with the same content appear. For example, Ashton Hall’s morning routine.
Some people deal with it by watching TV or finding something to read. But for me, the best way to avoid boredom is by driving.
Driving is not just a way to get from one place to another. It is an experience that keeps me engaged, entertained and excited. The moment I sit behind the wheel and start the car, the engine roar makes me feel a sense of purpose.
Unlike passive activities that require little thought, driving keeps the mind active. There are turns to make, traffic signals to watch and split-second decisions to navigate different situations, which makes the experience even better. There is no such thing as doing nothing while driving.
But the best and one of my favorite parts is driving on highways. The moment the road is clear, I press the gas, hearing the beautiful engine roar louder. This makes me feel the true meaning of the word freedom.
There are many reasons why driving never gets boring. One of them is that none of the drivers are similar to you. There might be days when the road is packed with wheeled vehicles, while on other days it might be empty, making it easy to speed along without stopping.
Another reason is the weather. The weather in Texas is unpredictable, but it doesn’t stop me from taking my car out of the garage and enjoying the experience. Different weather conditions make it feel like an adventure.
Beyond the thrill of speed, the scenery, driving through the city offers bright lights, busy streets and endless movement, while countryside roads provide peaceful views of rolling hills or vast open spaces. A drive at sunset paints the sky in warm colors, making even a simple trip feel different. No matter where the road leads, driving around makes each journey different.
Music is another element that makes rides feel different depending on the type of music. For example, if you’re listening to something fast-paced like metal or rap, simple drives like around your neighborhood sound exciting. Even without music, the sounds of the city, car engine and the road make driving impossible to get bored with.
Above all of the fun, driving provides you with a sense of freedom. Unlike taking public transportation or waiting for someone else, being behind the wheel means having full control over where to go and when to leave. There’s no need for a plan — just driving with no set destination can be just as fun as having one. The ability to go anywhere at any time makes driving one of the most freeing experiences.
For me, driving is not only a mode of transportation; it’s an experience. The thrill of highway cruising, the cool scenery, the connection with music and freedom to explore all come together, making boredom feel like nothing.
