Coppell sophomore Maya Easterwood and Denton Braswell junior Macy Wingard race for first place, with third over 10 seconds behind. However, Easterwood is unable to pull ahead of Wingard, placing 3.92 seconds behind her in second for the 3,200-meter dash with a time of 10:23.96.
The Coppell boys and girls track teams competed in the Class 6A Region I Track and Field meet, held at University of Texas at Arlington on April 18-19, resulting in five state qualifiers. The girls and boys teams placed fourth and ninth, respectively. On May 3, qualifiers compete at the University of Texas at Austin for the Class 6A state meet.
“As a coach, it’s important for me to make sure that the athletes look at it as just another meet, on the mental side,” Coppell girls track coach Landon Wren said. “We’re not trying to do more than what we’ve done up to this point, and that’s been a big theme of what we’ve been preaching all year.
After recovering from a back injury, sophomore Mia Schuller placed second in pole jump, clearing 11 feet, 6 inches and earning a state competitor spot.
”The nerves are real, but she did a great job of blocking out the noise, calming her nerves, and doing what she’s been trained to do,” Wren said.
Coppell junior Ainsley Bramer placed first for shot put at 44 feet, 10.25 inches, and a new school record in discus at 142 feet, 7 inches, placing fifth for discus.
“She was feeling pressure during the second half of the season because she had had a lot of success early and was not equaling that,” Wren said. “I sat her down and talked to her about doing, what she’s been trained to do and having fun again. The results are there because of it.”
Class 6A Region I is considered one of the most competitive, including top athletes from the state and being considered one of the top classes in the nation.
“Going into every meet, I predict in my head what I think will happen and how we are going to perform,” Wren said. “For the most part, we did exactly what I anticipated us doing and that is a sign of the kids doing a good job of staying in the moment.”
