Potter musical parody achieves fan base

While on mylifeisaverage.com this week, I came across an entry that talked about a Youtube video I’d never heard of: A Very Potter Musical.

It seemed amazing to me at the time that a Youtube video existed that I had not seen, so I immediately found it and watched it. I was impressed. Really impressed.

If you haven’t heard of it, don’t feel bad; not many have. In fact, it only has several hundred thousand views on Youtube. But it has a fan base that is growing fast.

The musical is parody of the Harry Potter series, but it’s really more of a tribute. The creators are a group of University of Michigan graduates, which is difficult to believe when you see the finished product. The script is witty and creative and the original songs are catchy and fun. It was originally performed this summer but has become an internet sensation sense it was posted.

Unfortunately, the musical has come into some legal trouble from Warner Bros. who owns the rights to the Potter series. Team Star Kid, the name of the group that made the musical, has to run any Potter-ideas by WB before they can do them to avoid lawsuits.

Still, A Very Potter Musical is one of the most entertaining videos that can be found on Youtube right now. In it, the character of Draco Malfoy is played by a woman, Quirrell and Voldemort are portrayed as more of an odd couple rather than servant and master, and Cho Chang is surprisingly not Asian.

These quirks and more make the musical one of the funniest videos I have seen in a very long time. If you need a laugh, and have several hours on your hands, I suggest this.
