PLANOIt is a typical Texas evening, the sun shining bright and the heat is high, when the Coppell football team gets ready to take the field.

On Friday night at John Clark Stadium in Plano the Cowboys took on Plano West in their district opener. Coppell won 55-7.

The Cowboys worked on a lot defensively in the past week trying to clean up some mistakes and the work showed during the game with the defense forcing three and outs and coming away with three interceptions.

“We looked a lot crisper all night,” Coppell football coach Antonio Wiley said. “Other than the fumble in the first quarter and the one bust on defense we played a clean game. I think our kids played lights out tonight.”

The name of the game was accuracy and that is exactly what Coppell junior quarterback Edward Griffin showed. The Cowboys marched their way to the end zone on their second drive and a short run by Coppell junior running back O’Marion Mbakwe led to a touchdown. Coppell attempts a two point conversion but is unsuccessful leaving the score at 6-0.

The Cowboys get the first sack of the night with Coppell senior linebacker Caden Cooper bringing down Plano West senior quarterback Rohit Basani.

The Cowboy offense takes the field again in the start of the second quarter and marches the ball back down the field capping off the drive with a fiveyard run for a touchdown by Mosley, his first of the night. The extra point is good, bringing the score to 13-0.

Capping off a dominating drive, Griffin keeps the ball and a short run takes him into the end zone for a touchdown, Coppell’s third of the night, bringing the score to 20-0.

The Cowboy defense gets another quick stop and with 1:04 left to go in the half Sneed catches the punt and turns it up field for significant yardage setting up a dominating offensive drive just past the 50 yard line.

Griffin comes out ready to execute, not a single incompletion in the drive. He completes his passes and marches the ball down field for a quick strike to the end zone. Coppell junior wide receiver Tucker Cusano scores and caps off a stunning 41 second drive. With 23 seconds left in the half, the score is now 34-0.

Coming out of halftime, Plano West gets the ball but gets picked off by Coppell and the Cowboy offense takes the field. Mosley runs the ball in for his third and final touchdown of the night bringing the score to 41-0.

Plano West had finally had enough and was able to quickly march down the field, breaking through Coppell’s defense with senior wide receiver Anthony Calhoun scoring their lone touchdown of the night. The score is now 41-7.

In the final quarter of the game, Plano West fought hard and made a last stitch effort to score with 5:48 left on the clock. It is fourth and six but the Cowboy defense refuses to let them into the end zone stopping them mere inches away from the pylon.

Coppell will be looking to capitalize on this win following into next week’s game against Lewisville.

“It is a great win for us,” Griffin said. “We got a great team in Lewisville next week so we need to practice really hard and come out ready to go.”
