Cowboys hone defensive edge, preparing for showdown with Falcons

It is the third game of the season and the Coppell football team has momentum, winning its first two games.

Coppell faces Keller Timber Creek tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. at Buddy Echols Field, 30 minutes later than the original scheduled time due to the heat.

“Overall, Timber Creek is a good football team,” Coppell coach Antonio Wiley said. “But they have a bunch of collective athletes that could beat you if you don’t show up and take care of business.”

Some players that Coppell intends to watch out for throughout the game are Timber Creek senior wide receivers Dozie Ezukanma and Lior Mendji.

According to Wiley, the Falcons run a three-quarterback rotation, all their quarterbacks possessing the ability to move through narrow pockets and escape the defensive line.

Throughout the season, only 28 points have been scored against the Falcons, whereas 88 have been scored against the Cowboys.

“Defensively we haven’t played to our potential yet,” Wiley said. “Every week we strive to get better so we have shifted the emphasis of our practice to make sure that we are looking at some of our areas of concern, defensively and offensively.”

However, the Cowboys have been working on defensive tactics in hopes to shut down these talented receivers on Timber Creek. If they can keep Ezukanma and Mendji at bay, the Cowboys will have a much easier time putting points on Timber Creek.

“I expect our kids to show up, play hard and fast and be extremely physical,” Wiley said. “I expect them to come out and compete at every phase of the game and give us an opportunity to be able to win the game.”

Rhea Choudhary is a junior at Coppell High School; she first took a step in D115 in order to pursue photography for The Sidekick. Despite her initial intentions, she is now a second year member, returning as a staff writer. At first, thought she wasn't the best fit for writing, but after deciding to give it a shot, she soon realized that she let her fear keep her from finding what she truly enjoys doing!  As an avid show binger, Rhea’s top three shows include Gossip Girl, Gilmore Girls and One Tree Hill, as she can go on for hours talking about any of them. She also loves watching classic Hindi movies (with lots of iconic songs and actors in them), along with consistently enjoying listening to her 24-hour Bollywood music playlist, on a loop. Her favorite food is drunken noodles and sushi, along with loving any sweets that contain milk chocolate or caramel. As a member of HOSA, Rhea hopes to pursue a future career in medicine, specifically to become an oncologist.
