On Monday evening, five book lovers gathered in the Cozby Library and Community Commons for the Got Books? book club.

The club is considered pressure-free, as members are not assigned any novels, and instead discuss whichever books they chose to read that month. Five Coppell residents were present: Marcia Raines with The Death of Mrs. Westaway by Ruth Ware, Ron Bower with Virgil Wander by Leif Enger, Amanda Kennedy with The Female Persuasion by Meg Wolitzer and Jason Kennedy, who attended to accompany his wife. Librarian Jennifer Franz moderated the meeting.

“What I liked [about The Female Persuasion] is it didn’t cast anyone as good or bad,” Mrs. Kennedy said. “And the character development was amazing, you really felt like you knew these people.”

Franz kept notes of members’ books and reactions in a notebook, also jotting down names of other books mentioned throughout the discussion – such as Orson Scott Card’s Ender’s Game and Lucy Maud Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables. There was a balance of negative, positive and neutral opinions.

“I would describe [Virgil Wander] as…there,” Bower said. “It was just there. It wasn’t great, it’s just the story of them getting back into life. It took me a while to get through.”

The next Got Books? meeting is Dec. 17.
