With only three matches remaining in its season, the Cowboys soccer team (14-2-1, 8-0-1 District 7-6A) takes on last-ranked Euless Trinity (1-8-2, 1-7-1) at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Buddy Echols Field.

In the teams’ last matchup, Coppell pulled out a 3-0 win over the Trojans. Since that win on Feb. 10, the Cowboys are 4-0-1, while Trinity is 1-3-1, its only win coming in the form of a 1-0 victory over third-ranked Southlake Carroll last week.

“It’s good that [Tuesday] Trinity actually beat Southlake 1-0. That tells us a bit about what Trinity is capable of doing so it puts into perspective for us going into Friday,” Coppell coach Chad Rakestraw said. “We should be able to have an edge to us knowing that it’s an important game for us after they got that win. And, they’re fighting for that playoff spot, for that fourth [district] spot. We know we’re going to get everything they’ve got.”

On Feb. 24, in a hard fought match, the Cowboys tied Southlake Carroll 1-1, the only goal coming from junior midfielder Scott Simigian.

“We need to focus on our energy for next game,” Simigian said. “I just happened to be the guy that got the last touch on that goal [against Southlake].”

Only one week later, Coppell took it to Richland, beating them 15-0 at Richland. They were able to bounce back from that 1-1 tie and get their biggest win of the season.

Because they are rounding out the home stretch of their season, the playoff implications of each game are high. In their second to last game of the season, the Cowboys face Colleyville Heritage, who is a mere two games behind Coppell for the top spot in District 7-6A.

“There is the obvious factor that Colleyville Heritage is kind of right on our heels after our tie against Southlake,” Rakestraw said. “For us to be able to win another district championship, which is our goal, we have got to be able to beat the teams that we should, and that would take care of Colleyville as well.”
