Notorious B.I.G., Tupac, Jay-Z and 50 Cent are some of the best rappers of all time. Lil’ Wayne is another name that needs to immediately be added to that list. Last night I attended Lil’ Wayne’s concert at the Allen Events Center and, despite the fact that I almost get beat up by an over dramatic fan, it was undoubtedly one of the best concerts I’ve ever been to.
When people heard that I was going, a lot of them asked me how it was possible for a rapper to have a good concert because all they do is spit beats and it’s not like they’re really performing (could you imagine Weezy trying to dance with bootylicious girls in the background? Yeah, neither could I.) But, from what I heard last night, the crowd was definitely pleased. There’s many things about Lil’ Wayne’s concerts that make them so unique, including the following things I noticed about last night’s concert.
1. Wayne is that he includes the audience in his performance and says, multiple times throughout the night, “I’m nothing without you”, which most singers neglect to do. Even the biggest celebrities have trouble communicating with the crowd, like Britney Spears in The Circus tour.
2. I have two words for you: Louis Vuitton. Last night, Lil’ Wayne’s opening act was instructed by Wayne himself to hand out a $1,400 Louis Vuitton purse to a fan in the crowd. Never before have I been to a concert where anything more than a mixtape, tacky poster or XXL t-shirt was handed out to a fan, and believe me, I’ve been to enough concerts in my day to tell.
3. Some singers make pathetic attempts to change genres mid-career, and Lil’ Wayne is one of few that made his change successful. Most Weezy fans have heard his rock song, “Prom Queen”. Amid all his Tha Carter III and newly released No Ceilings, one of my all time favorite albums, songs, he sang some rock songs, like “Prom Queen” and “Walk This Way” by Aerosmith, and also threw in some of his very first songs, offering up plenty of variety to the fans.
Now, if that hasn’t convinced you that Lil’ Wayne is a genius, I don’t know what will. This is Wayne’s last tour until he heads to jail for a year on Feb. 8 for attempted weapon possession and by far one of his best. So, if you have never listened to Lil’ Wayne before, I strongly encourage you do to so, you can even start with his new album Rebirth that is coming out later this year. And, next Feb., be on the lookout for some of his new “out of lockdown” raps.
