The 67th annual Golden Globe Awards will take place on January 17, 2010. Although the Globes by no means hold the prestige of the Oscars, they do hold some value in the minds of audiences. Which leads me to think, what compelled some rather random, perhaps undeserved nominations this year?
First off, I understand that Sandra Bullock has a place in America’s heart, but emotion does not constitute a nomination. That is, unless the emotion derives from a stunning performance. Which, in the case of Bullock, nominated for Best Actress in both The Blind Side and The Proposal, is not the case. Yes, I enjoyed her Ole Miss rendition of Southern’s finest. Yes, I could semi-bare her overbearing, workaholic persona as well. But when compared to fellow nominees like Helen Mirren and Meryl Streep, Bullock is quite the black sheep.
Secondly, (500) Days of Summer was nominated for Best Picture in a Musical or Comedy. Some might argue this “film” transcends both categories for its only memorable water fountain sing-along scene. But one scene does not signify a musical. So, does that insinate this movie is in fact a comedy? For some reason, I find it hard to believe a girl’s manipulation of a boy and his dependence on her a laughing matter.
Lastly, The Hangover for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. Enough said.
Grantid, there are some well-deserved nominations, such as Carey Mulligan for An Education, however, the others seem to fall flat.
My only hope is that the Hollywood Foreign Press corrects these lapses of judgment in time for Oscar season.
