Young people fail to think before they tweet, causing harmful effects on reputation

It is almost impossible to think people will ever stop tweeting dumb things: they just never will.

When it comes down to it, social media is a breeding ground for a variety of widely entertaining and outrageous posts. Although there are some tweets that make you giggle while scrolling down the Twitter feed, there are some that are just worth shaking your head.

On April 13, a 14-year-old Dutch girl sent a tweet, tagging American Airlines saying:

“@AmericanAir hello my name’s Ibrahim and I’m from Afghanistan. I’m part of Al Qaida and on June 1st I’m gonna do something really big bye.”

American Airlines quickly replied back to the girl, named Sarah, by stating:

“@QueenDemetriax_ Sarah, we take these threats very seriously. Your IP address and details will be forwarded to security and the FBI.”

Ironically, I actually heard about this story on Twitter. I saw a link to an article and decided to click on it. After reading the exchange of tweets between the girl and American Airlines and the news story that followed, I was utterly shocked.

As I continued to read the article, I could not believe that a 14-year-old girl continued to send even more tweets to the airline stating how she was “just a girl” and that she was scared.

The first thought that came to my mind was how could someone even think to tweet something like that in the first place?

There is a valuable lesson to be learned from this young girl’s tweet, along with the hundreds of other risque tweets that aim to shake up the Twittersphere. Think before you send a tweet, simple as that.

The problem that we have with social media such as Twitter in today’s society is that it is an easy ticket to fame and many people would purchase that ticket given the chance. What people tend to forget is by tweeting racy things, people run a serious risk of ruining their reputation and getting in trouble.

So the next time anyone decides to tweet something that might get them into trouble, they should really consider thinking twice about it. The consequences are real.
