The final home game of 2013 was a positive for the Coppell Cowboys (11-4) as they outdueled the hot hand of junior guard Austin Grandstaff and the Rockwall Yellow Jackets (6-5) for a 62-58 win.
Coppell senior post Simi Socks led the Cowboys with 15 points and senior guard Brandon Watson chipped in 14 points and four assists.
Watson and Socks have been two of six different leading scorers for the Cowboys this season, and both were active early in the game. Socks scored the game’s first basket and was also effective on the boards all night.
“Simi had a little bit of a slow start [to the season],” Coppell head coach Kit Pehl said. “He’s done a really good job lately of just doing little things.”
Watson hit a couple of big threes late in the game to increase the Cowboy lead. The senior has transitioned from two-year varsity sixth man to cracking the starting lineup all season.
“For our first three or four games, Brandon was leading us in scoring,” Pehl said. “I think he’s been real consistent and real confident with his perimeter shot, and he even scored a little bit inside today, and he did some good things.”
The Cowboys’ close out 2013 on Friday at Plano and come back in January to begin final preparations for district play.
