The Coppell boys basketball team gets on the court every day honing a single quality: focus.

Coppell coach Ryan Murphy emphasizes every fast break, rebound and layup in practice should be treated with the same urgency as a game position.

This Tuesday, Coppell faces Flower Mound at CHS Arena in District 5-6A play. The Cowboys are 1-2 in district and 14-10 overall.

“We’ve had some really good games where we did really well in discipline, and then some games where we didn’t play with the same focus that we’re capable of,” Murphy said.

As Coppell progresses through district, the team aims to understand their opponent’s strengths in-game. According to Murphy, Flower Mound’s strength is its adaptability.

“They don’t necessarily have that one guy that they run everything through,” he said. “They get a couple guys that can take advantage of how teams are playing them.”

According to Murphy, by acknowledging what Flower Mound does well, Coppell focuses on finding and exploiting a weakness.

“They are a team that is pretty solid fundamentally all the way, so this will be a game where we have to make them inefficient,” Murphy said. “We got to try and turn them over and make sure that we are on their shooters and taking away any second chance opportunities.”

District 5-6A is balanced and competitive, according to Murphy.

“Our district is really tough,” Murphy said. “There is not a single team in the district that is kind of a ‘gimme game’. Everyone is going to be a battle.”
