After teetering scores between both teams in the final seconds of each quarter, with the tension exacerbated by a double-overtime period, a final 3-point shot by the Flower Mound girls basketball team cost Coppell its last home game of the season, 60-54, in double overtime.
Regulation ended in a 46-46 tie.
The Cowgirls and Jaguars both channeled all of their energy into the first overtime period. With four points scored by the Cowgirls bolstering them ahead, Flower Mound quickly caught up by making a three point shot in the last 30 seconds, all efforts from both teams accumulating to a tied score at 52, resulting in a second overtime.
In the second overtime, two free throws by Coppell senior shooting guard Landry Sherrer brought the score to 54-54, but two free throws and a 3-point shot by the Jaguars solidified victory for them with 45 seconds left.
“It was really intense and passion filled,” senior shooting guard Sarah Mirza said. “It was a tough loss, but the energy was amazing in the arena.”
The Cowgirls plan to focus on evading mishaps depending on the opposing team’s defense for future games.
“It is mostly just figuring out situational things,” Mirza said. “We want to figure out what places to fall into based on what the defense looks like against us.”
The Cowgirls are to play their last game of the season against Marcus on Tuesday at 5:45 p.m.
