DALLAS- The smell of corny dogs in the air, beads of sweat on my forehead and the sounds of fair rides all made for a memory-making day at the annual Texas State Fair on Monday.
While many make a trip out to the fair every year, I have only gone twice before. The first two times I went with friends, but this year I decided to make it out to the fair with my dad.
My dad travels frequently, and so we wanted to find a way to spend a fun day before he left for another trip on Tuesday.
Armed with our fair coupons, we first made our way to the food court. While many wish to try the many deep fried novelties the state fair offers, we decided to take a different route and see if the fair could offer something relatively healthy.
Walking into the food court, one is overwhelmed by the smell of seemingly delicious fried food and corn dogs. Rows of red tables were set up, and everywhere you looked someone was enjoying something delicious.
We were pleasantly surprised to find a healthier option and bought grilled ham and cheese sandwiches from a booth, and for dessert bought chocolate covered strawberries. Wanting to get away from the crowds we decided to sit by the fountains, and there we ate our “healthy” fair food while enjoying the atmosphere of the fair.
Afterwards, we walked through the auto show and said hello to Big Tex. While the fair may come every year, it still holds excitement for people because you can never see everything it has to offer. Coming with friends and family also adds to the amusement of such an event that is uniquely Texan.
Enjoying the fair on my day off with my dad was a great way to make this year’s trip to Fair Park memorable. While he may be driving to Arkansas tomorrow morning, the smells and sounds of the fair will be fresh on both his and my mind.
