Five years ago, New York photographer Brandon Stanton started a trend that spread quickly on social media. He created a page called Humans of New York, on which he posts pictures of strangers he approaches on the streets of the city, and captions which give an insight into the unique stories that each person has to tell.
As many other cities, states and even colleges have started similar pages in their area, Coppell finally has its own “Humans of Coppell.”
Coppell High School junior, Belle Tan, is the creator of Humans of Coppell, which surfaced on Facebook in March and already has several posts. So far, several people in Coppell, from teachers to students, and even just residents of the town, have been featured on the page.
“Getting to know people and sharing their pictures seemed like a good idea,” Tan said. “We hope that through experience, we can get what people want and inspire people with other people’s stories.”
There are times when the people who are being interviewed are unsure about having their faces on the Internet so instead, the photographer captures the background, or just a part of the person, such as an accessory they are wearing or a photo covering the face.
With already 271 likes in less than a month, word about the page is quickly spreading and it is catching the interest of more and more people.
The page is a way to get people to open up and talk about themselves and their experiences. Oftentimes, the subjects are asked about a special moment in their life, advice they would give to others, or just any random fun facts about themselves.
Local events are also covered at times, such as talking to people who were present for Shattered Dreams and seniors who went to prom, and asking them about their feelings and experiences.
One of the first people that was approached by the creators to be featured on the Facebook page was CHS junior Uma Chavali who got the opportunity to talk about her love for dance.
“This page is a great addition to our city,” Chavali said. “It really emphasizes the awesome activities that happen here.”
With the people behind the scene still getting used to the way it works, Tan hopes that people will look past the few beginners’ mistakes they might make.
“We are still kind of a new page and we’re still learning, so please be patient with us,” Tan said. “Feedback from our fans is also never bad.”
