Football Preview: Coppell vs Trinity

Coming off a 62-7 rout of the Richland Rebels, the Cowboys seek to keep the momentum rolling heading into Friday’s game against he Euless Trinity Trojans.

If there was one thing that sticks out for the Trojans it is their stingy defense. The top ranked defense in the area, they allow only 200 yards per game and only 87 from the ground. This should be a good matchup for Coppell running backs Charles West, Brandon Rice and the rest of the backfield who combined for 305 total rushing yards against Richland last week.

“They are definitely a very talented defense,” wide receivers coach Nate Blackwell said. “They have big players up front who stop the run and get after the passer, and the secondary is really good when the ball is in the air and they also all break on the ball and are very physical. I think we are going to have to show up and play our ‘A’ game and be ready to make plays and execute.”

A big standout from last game on the Coppell side was senior quarterback Skyler Bonneau, who completed over 75 percent of his passes for 192 yards against Richland. Yet Blackwell believes that anyone can step up in this game, and that everyone is going to work as a team.

“We have a lot of talented players at the skill positions and at the lineman positions,” Blackwell said. “Honestly I think any of them could step up and be ready to make a big play when it is their time. We have been preaching it to them all year that it does not matter who gets the individual awards, it is all about the team awards. So I think they will all be ready when their number is called, and to us we are all about team success.”

Coming into a big game like this takes a lot of preparation to get to the level the players to be at, and a lot of after school hours. But for this week, the Cowboys have been preparing for it just like it is any other game in their schedule.

“We have been preparing just like we normally prepare, we did film study and game planning this weekend and we have been watching film with the players every day and we have been practicing after school,” Blackwell said. “So we have been trying to figure out what scheme and what plays will work best versus the way they play and how we can attack them. So we prepare like we normally can, but this is the most important game we have played so far this year so I think our focus is locked in.”
