While Coppell’s 62-7 romp of Richland in the annual homecoming game was just a single district win, the Cowboys found something to look forward to for the weeks to come in the return of junior wide receiver Josh Fink.
After missing the last four games due to a broken collarbone, Fink came back in his return to football with a nice game, catching four passes for 61 yards. His collarbone did not appear to have a major effect on his performance.
“It felt good being back out there,” Fink said. “I think I did good. I got some catches in there. The team played well.”
Because he came back in a game in which the team dominated its opponents, the transition back into the starting lineup was smooth.
“It was awesome. It was a great game to come back on and get back into the swing of things,” Fink said.
For the seniors on the team, this was their final time to feel the anticipation and excitement of the homecoming game. Because of the lopsided score, many players, especially seniors, who might not otherwise get in the game were given a chance to play.
“It was a good experience for them,” head coach Mike DeWitt said. “I’m glad everyone got to play and we got a win.”
Coming off their bye week, the Cowboys were able to work on many aspects of their game and improve upon their previous weeks. As the game went on, different parts of the offensive scheme stood out as aspects that the team executed well.
“We ran the ball, I was pleased with our offensive line, they really mashed people,” DeWitt said. “I was really pleased with the two-minute drill. I thought we were really able to move the ball.”
Stepping onto the field suited out for the first time since September 5, with the roar of the huge homecoming crowd, Fink was able to prove that he is back and better than ever.
