Losing is never a good thing. Being on the losing end of the scoreboard after the final horn sounds is a position no team ever wants to be in.
The Coppell Cowboys have struggled through two hard weeks, suffering three straight losses against Allen, Highland Park and the Episcopal School of Dallas (ESD).
Those three teams outscored Coppell a combined 32 goals to 21 in this three game stretch. With the Cowboys’ record hitting 7-6 overall, the team tried to break out of its slump with a flawless performance against the fourth place St. Mark’s Lions.
This game had major playoff implications as well. Sitting on the bubble at fifth place in Division I of the Texas High School Lacrosse League (only the top four teams in each of the three districts recieve playoff bids), the Cowboys need this win more than ever.
Unfortunately, for the fourth time in four games, Coppell found themselves three goals short of a victory, losing 8-5.
Playoff hopes now look bleak, and Coppell trail the Lions by three whole games with one game left in the season. You could say that the Cowboys are officially and mathematically eliminated from any playoff conversation.
Cowboys loss to Highland Park leads to playoff hopes’ demise
The Cowboys played their second overtime game of the season against the mighty Highland Park Scots last Friday.
It was a battle until the end, but the Scots’ Bryce Green scored the tie-breaker with 2:42 left in the first overtime period, leaving the Cowboys scratching their heads in an 8-7 loss.
While Coppell had a pretty strong chance of advancing to the playoffs, a victory against Highland Park would have likely sealed the deal.
For Coppell, senior atttack Henry Busch led the way with two goals and one assist, junior midfielder Davis Haddock scored twice, while junior attackmen Nick Hruby, Dillon Braun and sophomore Ben Dodson all contributed a goal and an assist.
College commitments hit in waves
Junior attack Nick Hruby’s commitment to Air Force in late March was not the only college decision that has come out of the Coppell boys lacrosse program.
Senior attack Henry Busch will be heading to Clemson University in Clemson, S.C. to play club lacrosse next fall.
Busch’s and Hruby’s choices should not be the last we hear about this year.
