Summer is quickly approaching and students are looking to fill their calendar with exciting plans, afraid they will be stuck with nothing to do.

With an array of awesome flicks coming to theaters this summer, one way to avoid this predicament is to go see a movie.

Some of the most anticipated movies of the summer include The Amazing Spider-Man, which comes out July 3rd, and The Dark Knight Rises, which hits theaters July 20th.

While The Dark Knight Rises is the third installment of the highly acclaimed Batman trilogy (Batman Begins and The Dark Knight were the previous two films), The Amazing Spider-Man is actually an attempt to recreate the Spiderman movies after the Toby McGuire originals steered away from the plot of the original comics.

“I am looking forward to Spiderman since the older ones with Toby McGuire were just bad,” sophomore Kristen West said.  “The newer one seems to more accurately follow the original Marvel story and it just looks really exciting. I am looking forward to the new enemies, the mutant creature things.”

Even fans of the original movies are looking forward to the new take on the series, especially with the new actors and storyline.

“I feel like this one will be more accurate since the last one was definitely not,” senior Max Fillingim said.  “I like the main character, I like Emma Stone, I am excited for her, and I think they will do a little bit more about the background.  I definitely liked the originals — they were fun — but this one will be more accurate.”

Not only are many excited about the reinvention of the acclaimed Spiderman series, but many also anticipate the final installment of the exciting Batman trilogy, which comes out the same month.

“I am super excited,” senior Grant Jonas said.  “I am really excited to see how Christopher Nolan wraps up a series as good as this one.  I definitely expect some moral gray area where Bruce Wayne has to test his moral code and values.  I also expect more than just a superhero movie.”

While Jonas is a devoted Batman fan, even those who are not much of a fan of the trilogy are still very excited for the upcoming film.

“I really like the action, it is even nice for girls since it has a little bit of a love twist, but I thought the [first two movies] were very well paced,” sophomore Mikki Hoffman said.  “And of course the lighting and the way it is actually filmed and the setting is just really awesome.”

While some of the trilogy’s fans are skeptical of the new actors in the movie such as Anne Hathaway as Catwoman, they are still expecting a great movie based on the first two in the series.

“I saw them both [Batman Begins and The Dark Knight] in theaters; I was in shock both times I saw them,” Fillingim said.  “I would give anything to see them both again for the first time, like I forgot everything and watched them again, so I could be shocked and amazed all over again.”

Other movies that students are planning to see this summer include the newest Pixar film, Brave (June 22nd), Prometheus  (June 8th) and Ted (July 13th).  While these movies are not receiving as much excitement as the superhero movies, students are still looking forward to them.

Brave is going to be awesome,” Hoffman said.  “I think it is about time Disney showed another side to their feminist and female character protagonist.  I am excited that we get to see someone taking charge of their own life rather than waiting for prince charming.”

With a long list of movies coming out this summer, there will be plenty of ways to leave the house and have something to do.

Mark your calendars and plan to get friends together this summer to see some of these great movies.
