The Coppell boys and girls wrestling team delivered a powerful performance at the Class 6A Region I Meet on Friday and Saturday at CHS Arena.
In girls wrestling, the Cowgirls excelled in one of the state’s deepest regions. Senior Trinitee Hobbs (third place, 100-pound class), senior Hailey Kennedy (third place, 120) Elizabeth Cummings (third place, 125), sophomore Isabella Malcolm (second, 135) senior Ishitha Malladi (third, 145) and senior Elizabeth Urick (third, 155) advance to the Class 6A State Meet on Friday and Saturday at the Berry Center in Cypress.
Coppell junior Pedro Ibarra finished third in the 165-pound class to advance and join the six Cowgirls in Cypress. Sophomore Sebastian Ramos’s fifth place finish in the 138 class earned a spot as an alternate.
Hobbs lost the semifinal against El Paso Franklin’s Jubilee Rendon. Rendon went in aggressive, with a pattern of takedowns and escapes, ending the match from a technical fall.
Kennedy, with 115 career wins, was pinned in the semifinals by Nayeli Ortiz. Kennedy came back strong in the cons round, placing third in regionals after pinning Wolforth Frenship’s Joslyn Sabinas. Cummings wrestled from the championship round all through consolation rounds, placing third against Wolfforth Frenship’s Kristianna Boyum after pinning in the second period.
Malcolm battled through all three rounds reaching the championship match, but got pinned by Daniela Hernandez from a pin in the second period. Malcolm is 62-13 entering her junior year.
