As the future of Coppell ISD’s enrollment comes into the spotlight, the Coppell ISD Board of Trustees conducted a Board Workshop on Monday. The board discussed the three-year future plan for the district’s budget allocation, and the academic calendar for 2026-27 and 2027-28.
Superintendent Dr. Leanne Shivers stated the importance of prioritizing budget allocation towards effective educator compensation, optimizing high-quality education for learners. Budgeting for future academic years is based on current enrollment.
“We are in a time period where operating off of what our known enrollment is crucial as we move forward. Knowing that our community has options being given to them by ESA (Education Savings Accounts), we’re in a situation where banking off of what is unknown continues to exacerbate our problems,” Dr. Shivers said because of the option of being able to pay for private education given to parents by ESA.
Board President David Caviness inquired about whether the cost of living was a factor when allocating the budget for the next three years.
“We have not built in a cost of living for the next three years, and that is consistent,” Dr. Shivers said.
Apart from budget allocation topics, trustees Leigh Walker and Anthony Hill raised concerns for the future of the district-wide Professional Learning Communities.
“I think the PLC is very, very important, but also very expensive, and that is an area where I believe we have not deployed the way we have now,” Walker said.
The meeting concluded with the approval of an increase in the Early Resignation Notice Incentive, which is a part of the budget reduction plan for the district. The program expanded from 40 eligible employees to 55 eligible employees. This early notice initiative helps the district manage staffing and enrollment for the upcoming school year.
In addition, academic calendars for academic years 2026-27 and 2027-28 were approved. The calendar has 76,860 minutes set in place, exceeding Texas’ required minutes, as well as 187 required workdays for teachers. The approved calendar includes spring break, which has been moved to early March.
