Twelve seconds remain on the clock. Coppell junior guard Mallory Cooper scores a layup and seals the Coppell girls basketball team victory, 54-51, over Denton Guyer in the District 5-6A opener on Tuesday at CHS Arena.
Coppell attempted to keep up throughout the first half, but the Wildcats ultimately took a 24-11 lead into halftime.
“We were pretty weak in the first half,” Coppell sophomore guard Amber Coffey said. “While getting us started, we were missing too many shots. But we turned it around.”
The Cowgirls came into the second half with newfound momentum. Within 30 seconds of the third quarter, Coffey hit a 3-pointer. Within the next 30 seconds, Coppell senior forward Adriana Reijnen followed up with a two pointer.
By the end of the third, Coppell trailed, 39-36, to put itself in position to win in the fourth quarter.
“Our 3-pointers were our best offensive plays tonight,” Reijnen said. “Defense wise, we were able to eliminate their best shooters by being close up.”
Coppell sophomore point guard Avary Campbell scored a 3-pointer to open the fourth quarter and Reijnen followed with two layups with six minutes left on the clock. Coffey also scored two more 3-pointers within the last half of the quarter.
“At the end of the day, the team that is going to win is the one that wanted it more,” Reijnen said. “It was really definite that in the second half, we wanted it more.”
