On Tuesday, Coppell City Council announced the proclamation for Arbor day. It also discussed new places for a shuttle bus to travel to and site planning for a new McDonald’s restaurant.
The proclamation was given to Coppell Biodiversity Education Center supervisor and certified arborist Jonathon Ward. The proclamation states the vital role of trees, how they help the citizens of Coppell connect with nature, and the positive impact trees have on the environment.
“Trees serve as the backdrop to a lot of our favorite memories,” Ward said. “I am proud to serve to be a part of Coppell and be a part of this legacy of 29 years.”
Over the past couple of years, the McDonald’s restaurant on the southwest corner of Sandy Lake Road at 125 S. Denton Tap Road has gone through changes such as adding a drive-thru lane, demolishing the PlayPlace, and adding a new pay window, though it was not built.
“We’re hoping that we will get permitted approval by mid to end of December,” Lagan Engineering’s Margaret Grissom said. “We want to start construction in January and be open in May.”
The new restaurant would provide both a dine in and drive-thru services. The building would also be slightly bigger than the previous site, have drive-thru windows for pay and pickup, while maintaining the double drive through line.
Council discussed the expansion of the Marriott AC hotel by the northwest corner of Interstate 635 on Belt Line road. They plan to increase the room count and offer transportation to and from Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and surrounding businesses in Coppell, Cypress Waters and Irving.
Secretary Lauren Thoden discussed the alcohol variance of the convenience store 7-Eleven. Thoden requested for a 297-foot variance for 7-Eleven for the sale of alcoholic beverages for off premise consumption with a required notification to Coppell Montessori.
“A private school may request the governing city of Coppell to prohibit the use of alcohol within 1,000 feet of the private school,” Thoden said.
Council spoke about future events such as Veterans Day, and even some past events that happened such as the performance of “Grease the Musical” performed by the Coppell High School theater program.
“The community is firmly invited to the Veterans day ceremony and ribbon cutting of the new veterans plaza,” deputy city manager Kent Collins said.
Coppell ISD liaison and council member Kevin Nevels spoke on the potential consolidation of Town Center Elementary School providing context and upcoming plans for the decision.
“The CISD Board of Trustees was slated to vote on the Campus Consolidation Plan that was presented over the summer,” Nevels said. “That vote was postponed until later in the month as early as Oct. 27.”
