On Wednesday, Coppell ISD announced 47 National Merit Semifinalists, including 45 from Coppell High School and two from New Tech High @ Coppell.
CHS had the most National Merit Semifinalists in the North Texas region, tying with Austin Liberal Arts and Science Academy for the second highest in the state.
A National Merit Semifinalist represents less than one percent of high school seniors with a high score on the PSAT/NMSQT exam. CHS made up more than four times the national average of semifinalists, with 4.5% of 1,006 seniors.
“I am so proud of our kids,” CHS Principal Laura Springer said. “They’re truly some of the brightest students in Texas, and they’re also kind, well-rounded and full of Cowboy grit. These students work hard, support one another and show every day what it means to be a Coppell Cowboy.”
The recognition not only reflects seniors’ academic strengths but also commends the individual preparedness and dedication of students who worked towards their goal.
“The most challenging part of taking the test was the anticipation of whether I’m going to make the cut,” National Merit Semifinalist senior Neha Sanjay said. “I was super happy when I found out I qualified.”
Three percent of New Tech’s senior class of 65 are named National Merit Semifinalists, which is three times the national average.
“This recognition affirms the academic rigor and quality of a New Tech education,” New Tech Principal Zane Porter said. “Our project-based learning model not only challenges students intellectually, but also equips them with leadership, collaboration and problem-solving skills that prepare them for successful futures.”
