The second inning is underway in the Coppell baseball team’s game against Flower Mound Marcus at the Coppell ISD Baseball/Softball Complex. As Marcus junior left fielder Austin Allen singles, Marcus sophomore second baseman Jameson Mayfield sprints from second base to home plate, scoring the only run of the game.
The Marauders reigned 1-0 in Tuesday night’s defensive game against the Cowboys. Coppell senior pitcher Drew Minnick was a standout on the mound. Coppell coach Armando Garza credits the tight game to the pitching.
“It was a pitching duel and it could have gone both ways,” Garza said. “Marcus has coached them very well and they’ve got a lot of talent on that team, but so do we, and I take my boys any day of the week.”
The game against Marcus was also the final home game of the season.
“It’s a heartbreak for these seniors,” Garza said. “I’ve watched them pour into this program for the last four years, and it’s a difficult thing to feel when it’s your last one and you’ve given so much effort and so much of your time to this program. I give all credit to the seniors and I just wish it worked out a little bit differently for them.”
The Cowboys finish the season on Friday at Marcus.
“It’s going to be the exact same; it’s going be a dogfight all the way through,” Garza said. “We’re a good team and so are they, so we’ve just got to go out and take it.”
