As Coppell High School releases students for special off-campus lunches, students flock to nearby establishments to get a drink. Even though there are other options, many choose Feng Cha, a nearby boba tea shop.
But why?
“It is just a chill place to hang with your friends,” sophomore Jayendra Sheri said. “The environment is nice and quiet.”
It typically does not take long for customers to become fans of the shop.
“It has really good boba,” sophomore Aditi Yechangunja said. “You just can’t stop drinking it, it is so good.”
But the boba isn’t the only reason for Feng Cha’s popularity. Another reason is the owner, Alex Kim.
“I really wanted to focus on interacting with our customers — especially CHS students,” Kim said. “I just love meeting these kids, they are all so nice and sweet.”
Kim says interacting with customers has them coming back again and again, boosting sales.
“I once had a bunch of girls come in and order seven drinks and they were trying to arrange it into a flower shape,” Kim said. “I thought it looked so cool that I asked if I could take a photo and post it on Instagram, and they said yes and the post got a ton of likes.”
According to Kim, the girls continued to return, each time inviting several more customers.
But Feng Cha’s expertise goes beyond social media — it also stretches to their unique style of making boba, as they don’t follow the same rules as other boba tea places.
“Lots of other places use syrups,” Kim said. “We use fresh fruit and try to keep it fresh for as long as possible.”
Kim said that throughout the years he has also made several changes to the interior.
“We added these little photo booths so people can take photos,” Kim said. ”We want the moments here to last forever.”
Feng Cha now also features games to foster community in the shop, whether through its large pool table or play area for kids.
“I brought both items from home,” Kim said. “I wanted people to have fun here and give parents a break by occupying their kids.”
Kim’s efforts for change in his shop do not go unnoticed.
“I love using the pool table when I head over,” Sheri said.
Kim is proud of what he’s done with the place.
“I feel like I’ve made a difference in this growing community,” Kim said.
