What inspired you to become an officer within CHS9 HOSA?
I remember joining a Drama Club in middle school. I would always look up to the officers. They made me feel so welcome, and the amount of effort they put in to make sure us members had a great time was admirable. The honor of being someone people can depend on and look up to is part of the reason I ran for office in the first place. I hope to be a president that my members can lean on for support.
What initially interested you in the world of health science?
Seventh grade science overall is what got me interested in medicine. When we learned about body systems, I found it so interesting how there can be so many different systems constantly working to keep me alive. When we dissected frogs, I enjoyed getting to see the digestive system face to face instead of a diagram. Did finding bodily waste inside the frog’s small intestine scar me? Yes. Was it also the coolest thing I have ever done? Also yes. The human body is a giant puzzle that I hope to one day master.
What are some qualities a HOSA officer must have?
HOSA officers definitely have to be selfless. Since HOSA is a competition organization, a HOSA officer should do whatever they can to help their members succeed in competition. If an officer is the type of person who gets jealous of others’ success, they should rethink their position. I believe that even in competition, we can still have a healthy environment. Other people’s success is not your failure, and should never be treated like that.
What are some highlights about working with your peers in HOSA?
The HOSA Health Awareness stand. It was a new event we started this year where we got HOSA members to make informative pamphlets about sleep schedules, healthy diets and general hygiene. We would pass them out to students and give them candy if they answered a few pop quiz questions. I know giving candy to kids while simultaneously telling them to be healthy is hypocritical, but everyone deserves something sweet now and then.
Why should people care about HOSA?
HOSA includes the future generation of health science. My classmates are all knowledgeable and passionate about healthcare, and they deserve recognition for it. We should encourage them to pursue these careers, especially since healthcare professionals affect everyone on a daily basis. HOSA teaches leadership and cooperation, which is incredibly important to the health science field no matter which area you specialize in.
How does it feel knowing you represent Coppell
It is an honor. I have no one else to thank but my classmates themselves. After all, they are the ones who elected me in the first place. I hope I can do them justice and create a club that is bustling with energy and innovation. I always loved leadership roles because I feel as if I can do a service to others. I have always wanted to be someone that people can depend on, and hopefully I can be that person now.
