Tipoff for the Coppell boys basketball team against Denton Guyer is set for 7:30 p.m. on Friday at CHS Arena in District 5-6A.
Coppell faces a formidable challenge. Coming off an 83-81 overtime loss to Hebron on Tuesday, the Cowboys are focusing on improving their defensive discipline and consistency to keep their playoff hopes strong.
For Coppell coach Ryan Murphy, the emphasis during practice this week has been on effort, focus and teamwork: qualities he believes have been inconsistent throughout the season so far.
“Our primary focus is valuing each possession and playing with the discipline required to win,” Murphy said. “When we bring effort and play for each other, we’re a very good team. But when we don’t, we’re very beatable.”
Guyer presents a significant challenge with its balanced lineup. Featuring three dynamic guards and a 6-foot-7 senior center Tyler Copes, Guyer’s roster is filled with Division I talent and has its sights set on a deep playoff run.
“They’re probably the most talented team in the district,” Murphy said. “Their guards are dynamic, and their big man plays well off what they create. We’ll need to make multiple defensive efforts to slow them down.”
Junior guard Sibu Socks, who posted a season-high 34 points in the loss to Hebron, has been a consistent offensive player for the Cowboys. Nonetheless, Murphy is spotlighting the need for defensive improvements to improve their scoring ability.
“Offensively, we’ve had some efficient nights, but our defensive consistency has to improve,” Murphy said. “We’ve struggled to make stops, and that’s something we’re addressing in practice.”
Coppell will also rely on players to step up as leaders on and off the court. While Murphy does not designate team captains, he thinks leadership must be earned through accountability and consistency.
“Leadership has to start with holding yourself accountable before holding others accountable,” Murphy said. “We need consistency in that area.”
With district competition intensifying, the Cowboys aim to build on recent improvements, including better ball movement and understanding of team expectations.
“From where we started to where we are now, we’re seeing more frequent good days,” Murphy said. “Now it’s about stacking those good days and executing consistently.”
