The arena is filled with commotion as a foul is called on Coppell in overtime. With just 40 seconds left on the clock, the Hebron and Coppell boys basketball teams are tied.
Both teams exchanged baskets in overtime. However, a foul on Coppell gave Hebron the advantage it needed to win the game. Chants from the Coppell student section filled the air as Hebron senior guard Ashton Toney stepped up to the line. The first free throw goes in with a swish. The second one does the same. The game is over for Coppell.
On Tuesday night, Senior Night ended with a 83-81 Hebron victory over Coppell at CHS Arena.
“We failed to do the little things to close up the game,” senior guard Ethan Macken said. “The ref calls what he calls and you just have to respect it.”
With 22 seconds left in the regulation, a foul on Coppell junior guard Isaiah Fleming, leading him to foul out of the game. Needing just two points to tie the game, both free throws were drained as Hebron was able to push the game into overtime.
Hebron quickly started racking up points in the first quarter. However, Coppell answered in the second quarter with more shots. By the end of the half, Coppell led, 42-37.
“The highlight of the game for our team was the second quarter,” Macken said. “We scored almost 40 points and that’s almost unheard of. If we continue to play like that, we’ll be really good this season.”
Junior guard Sibu Socks was particularly effective in scoring the second quarter.
“He’s got a world of potential,” Murphy said. “There’s not much that he can’t do when he makes up his mind, he’s just going to do it.”
Going into the third quarter, the game continued to be tight, with the teams each scoring back to back. The game was tied at 61 after three quarters.
With the fourth quarter featuring a plethora of points, Murphy was unhappy with the consistency of the Cowboys.
“We pick and choose when we’re going to do stuff right,” Murphy said. “When you’re in district play against good teams, that’ll get you beat. When we play together with effort and discipline, we’re a very good team, but when we don’t do one of those things we are very beatable.”
